An existing Victorian warehouse dating from the 19'th century was converted into offices, loft apartments and the headquarters of Alliance Francaise du Cap. The existing mostly timber structure was respected by adding a new layer in a contrasting material - steel and glass. A new semi-circular atrium was created to interconnect the floors, bring light to all levels and serve as circulation space with footbridges. Visual boundaries between spaces were removed to open up to this atrium. This creates an awareness of, and encourages encounters with co-inhabitants.

The following main alterations were made:

  • Atrium created through all 5 levels
  • Second floor was moved up by 1 meter to install a mezzanine floor
  • Roof space was altered to accommodate 3 loft apartments.
